New beginnings for an editor

Hello to all new and old friends!

What does "new beginnings" mean, anyway? Is it an oxymoron? Whether it is or not, it is an often-used phrase in the English language.

I won't give you a definition here, because I think Karen Kirk does a very nice job of that in her aticle.

I come back as the Editor-in-Chief of the SWC Online Voices after an absence of two years. In that time, I have:

chaired a SWC annual convention (Seattle, 2003)
gone back to school (copyediting and indexing)
had two children start puberty
adopted a dog for my family
taught a course in American Sign Language for elementary school children

I'm sure there's more that I can't think of at the moment. I guess you could say I haven't been idle in the past couple of years! So what do "New Beginnings" mean to me? A chance to expand my skills as an editor. A chance to make new friends.

Please join me and all the writers in this issue in celebrating new beginnings.
