Letter from the Editor
By Barbara Bavido
The ritualistic ripening of fruits, flowering blossoms, and long days signal the new birth of summer has arrived once more, bringing with it the familiar memories of yesterday, and the hope of a better tomorrow. With the changing of clocks come reminders to check our smoke detectors.
For many with hearing loss the seasonal changes signal the time for a new “Dry and Store” and new hearing aid covers. For others, new hearing aids or learning to cope with their present ones, given the onslaught of summer sounds. Neil’s column is chock full of helpful advice for how to get the most out of your hearing aids.
Summertime guests, picnics and cookouts, often remind us of what isn’t so familiar as well. At a recent gathering of SayWhatClub members, some guests became increasingly frustrated that no one was able to talk on the phone, much less hear it ring. The doorbell? Fugedaboudit! Like kids at a slumber party, we swapped hearing aids, ear molds, hints and the newest devices. Although Curtis Dickenson was absent from the gathering, word got back to him that help was desperately needed! In his column for this edition he has included helpful information on the issue of how to pick a doorbell-alerting device, and even multi-use devices.
Elsewhere, one brave member, encouraged by her teens, attempted the “new and improved” Self-Checkout. You can chuckle along with Denise as she shares her adventures with technology.
Asa, one of our Swedish members shares her summer story, the summer that began her Journey to Silence.
In the Say it visually collection, you will find an array of poems and prose.
In the editorial column, the recent onslaught of “try and buy” hearing aids, a newfangled “one kind fits all,” is discussed. Also, there is a slight beam of hope, for in this column you will read of what Linda Knight’s letter to Governor Bush has done to help her en route to becoming a dually implanted deaf/blind woman.
Finally I saved the best for last, we bring you the latest news of the SayWhatClub July Convention in Minnesota. There is still time to register! The excitement is building as we plan for meeting old and new friends. I encourage everyone who can attend, to do so.
