Denver, the mile high city

The beautiful city of Denver, Colorado, sits at 5280 feet above sea level with the gorgeous Rocky Mountains as a western border. Our climate is listed as "high desert" because of our dry summers. Our high temps in summer usually don't get above 90 degrees, but we had a stretch of 20+ of those days in 2008. Denver averages 300 days of sunshine per year, and sunscreen is advisable for most any season. It's also good to drink plenty of water while here, due to the altitude and dry air. Denver night-time temperatures usually are a welcome relief from the daytime and many people open their windows to let in the cool air.

Denver is a sprawling metropolitan area, with a population of about 2.7 million. We have a total of eight professional sports teams; most of the team stadiums are accessible via our light rail system. Our downtown area is extensive, with shopping, restaurants, Denver Mint, our Capital building, art museums, and a downtown amusement park. Denver will be the host of the King Tut exhibit during the mini convention and we're also the home of the Molly Brown House Museum which was the long time home of the Titanic's most famous survivor.

Denver is the site of the SayWhatClub mini convention being held from August 4 - 8, 2010. It's a mini convention because we won't have all the "fixings" of our usual cons. We will, however, have workshops, sightseeing tours, and a dinner banquet at the hotel. There will be plenty of opportunities to sit back with old and new friends and just talk, too. There are two shopping malls located near our hotel which offers free shuttle service to the malls. In addition, our hotel has a free shuttle to and from Denver International Airport.

[Thank you, Julie, for sharing this beautifully descriptive piece about the host city of this year's mini-Convention. It makes one want to not miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience! To all those who make it to Denver, have fun, celebrate with new-found friends, and re-connecting with your "old" ones. We hope to read all about your experiences in the next edition of SWC Online Voices! Love from the Editor]
