Thanksgiving 2009

Thanksgiving for our family used to start with me getting up about 5 AM to start the turkey.

The last three years, my son in law has offered to do the cooking, so all I do is make the pumpkin bread to take along to their house. On Thanksgiving Morning there are two things that I always do, first is go out and get the newspapers so I can check all the ads for Black Friday and the second thing is to turn on the TV to watch the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Tradition is that we eat about 2 PM and our meal usually consists of turkey with bread stuffing, candied sweet potatoes, green beans with almonds, cranberry sauce, creamed pearl onions and pumpkin bread. Then we take a break and if the weather is nice we go for a walk and the kids play some tag football. Then after a few have had their nap, while "watching" the football games on TV, we have pumpkin pie, with or without whipped cream and ice cream and naturally coffee and tea and After Eight mints. Then it is time for another little nap or walk.

Much later everyone is ready for their turkey sandwich, which I must confess is much more preferable to me than the whole huge meal. I like mine with white meat, lettuce, cranberry sauce, and some light mayo.

By then everyone is so full, that they just lie around watching TV or a movie or go to bed.

This year some of the stores had their best sales starting at midnight, so I came home and then my daughter and her family left to go shopping.

This was Winnie's first Thanksgiving with us (Winnie is my hearing dog) and she was dressed in her Eagles T-shirt and got her own special treats.
