SWC Structure

Occasionally people ask how many lists SWC has, or what each list is for. Here's an overview of how our lists are structured at this time.

"Base" or "Home" lists:

These are the six general topic lists. They are:

SWCForum
SWConnect
SWCFriends
SWCNetwork
SWCWorld
SWCVistas

Each was created as SWC grew to points where new space was needed for incoming people. To be considered a participant in SWC, subscription to one of the home lists is required. Each of these lists has around 70 to 90 subscribers.

Permanent special topic lists:

Special Topics lists are:

SWCGlobal
SWC_CI
SWC_OurChildren

They focus primarily on one subject. SWCGlobal is for people who wish to focus on international issues. SWC_CI is a list for those interested in cochlear implants.

SWC_OurChildren is provided for parents of children who are hoh or deaf. Most of the parents on the list are hearing. This is our newest list, and we expect it to grow during the coming year. This list is the first project we've taken on as a result of a bequest to SWC that came with instructions to "use it for the benefit of children who have hearing loss." You might say that SWC_OurChildren is a "hybrid" list as it is a special topic list, but it is also considered a home list for the parents involved there. Those parents also may choose to join one of our other lists if they wish to gain a perspective of hearing loss as shared by other SWCers.

One more list was added to the SWC family in early December. Deaf/Hearing Couples was started a few years back by SWCer Anne Mcintosh. It has thrived over the years and now she has asked SWC to take over administration of the list. We anticipate that "SWCDHC" will be a list structured much like SWC_OurChildren. We'll have more details in the near future as we welcome more than 100 new subscribers to SWC.

Temporary special topic lists:

We also run two temporary special topic lists:

SWCExplore
SWCCommons.

Each of these lists focuses on short-term single topics. During part of each year, SWCCommons will be devoted to convention planning. Initially, SWCExplore discussed issues involved in being deaf/hoh and single. Currently it has been discussing deafness and employment and is now expanding to take in the topic of "self-reliance." SWCCommons has been a book-chat list for the past couple of months. Since each list focuses on short-term topics, general off-topic conversation is discouraged and discussions are structured as opposed to wide open. Watch for announcements of upcoming topics which will include the person to contact should you wish to join in the focused discussions.
