I had the pleasure of sharing two weeks in Colorado with Joanie the summer of "Camp Colorado" for SWC. She was so full of laughter and mischief...there were many fun 'incidents' with her...but I think the most unforgettable was when she and Bob G and I sang and signed New York, New York at a Chinese Restaurant near the Garden of the Gods. We did an encore in Cape May and I am so grateful to have that time with me forever.

God Bless You , Joanie ...you made us all laugh!

Joannie was one of the first SWC members I met years ago in Cap May. I had spoken with her briefly online and was delighted to meet her in person. At first, I was a little taken back, wondering what sad disease made her speech so difficult. Soon, after a few giggles and a few brightly colored condoms, my discomfort turned into awe and amazement, at not only Joannie's strength, but at her humor too. I can't begin to tell you how sad I am over the turn of events in her life, even expected as they were, with her disease. She was always such a trooper considering her difficulties. She gave me hope and always made me smile. I saw the determination in her face and her words. As I first lost my hearing, she encouraged me to tackle it and not run, to not accept any societal constraints imposed on me. Thanks Joannie. From that, I selfishly stored up some strength of my own.

I remember my very first meeting with her; she handed Robin, Cynthia, Sybil and me some brightly colored condoms which we proudly displayed in the windows of our rooms, for the entire length of the conference. A statement to all passerby about our group playfulness; as much a statement of thanksgiving for the smiles Joannie gave us all. Later, we even blew these up at the bar and bounced them around. I can still see people in my minds eye, dancing with glee; these assorted colored condoms as dance partners. Gosh such smiling bringing, heart warming memories. I have tears falling, as I read the posts about her surgery and now her passing. What a helpless feeling. In these last days I have often pondered the chatter about Joannie and her condom jokes. I wonder, if SHE knew she was creating her legacy of memories and smiles for us to keep in our hearts, and just what a selfless gift that is to others. I am inspired to become better, bigger and more present for those around me by her example. A life well lived, touches many others, and she has done that indeed. This connection with us all at SWC, is a loving reminder of what a wonderful, life inspiring, smile-giving, hope-spring this club is. I think SWC helped shape Joannie as much as she helped shape this club. Here, she was allowed to joke and to blossom the best way she could. What a double blessing to witness. I thank God for each and every one of you.
