Beyond-Hearing

What is 'Beyond-Hearing' all about?

Beyond-Hearing is an e-mail list run by Majordomo software at Duke University Computer Assistance Center. Owned by Miriam (Mimi) Clifford, dmimi@duke.edu it is intended to provide a communication vehicle for people who have a hearing loss and who seek to overcome the barriers of hearing loss between themselves, other people, and the environment. Hard of hearing people, Self Help for Hard of Hearing (SHHH) members, Association of Late Deafened Adults (ALDA) members and such other persons as might be interested are invited to join us.

Why did we choose the name "beyond-hearing?" To paraphrase Dana Mulvany, who first suggested this name, and Therese Shellabarger both of whom proposed some of these ideas for its use, some of us are beyond hearing. We are interested in living beyond our hearing losses, in maintaining contact with the larger world to the greatest degree possible, using whatever technology or adaptations are possible. All of us need to look beyond hearing, once it becomes impaired, to other things in life that we value. We also realize there is far more to hearing loss than simply the loss of hearing---there often is loss of other things taken for granted, like the sense of emotional connection with people.

Mostly "beyond-hearing" is a positive term; it conveys that there are other aspects of life beyond hearing which we can and do address. Hearing is a tool, in a sense, or a gateway to other things; we need to look beyond "normal" hearing for other tools, other methods of having a meaningful, satisfying life.
